Pollen Atlas Glossary
Saccate
pollen grain with blisters or air sacs.
Scabrate
ref. sculture. Sporoderm with elements less than 1 um high.
Sculpture
sporoderm, observed in its superficial ornaments. Outside pattern of the pollen grain.
Semiangular
distinctive pollen shape in polar view.
Semilobate
distinctive pollen shape in polar view.
Semitectate
pollen sporoderm with discontinuous interrupted tectum.
Sexina
external side of the exine.
Simplibaculate
ref. sculture. Reticulated sporoderm with one row of bacula along the reticulum.
Spheroidal
pollen grain with the axes length more or less equal (P/E = 1).
Spinulose
sporoderm with short and narrow echinate elements.
Sporoderm
pollen grain wall formed by the exina (outer layer) and the intine (inner layer).
Stephanocolpate
ref. aperture. Pollen grain with more than three colpi arranged along the pollen equatorial belt.
Stephanocolporate
ref. aperture. Pollen grain with more than three colpi and pori arranged along the pollen equatorial belt.
Stephanoporate
ref. aperture. Pollen grain with more than three pori arranged along the pollen equatorial belt.
Striae
more or less depressed parallel elements that in a striate pollen alternates with the lirae.
Strioclavate
ref. sculture. Sporoderm with striate clavae.
Structure
sporoderm observed in layers and particularly in section. Exine inner organisation.
Subangular
distinctive pollen shape in polar view.
Subcircular
kind of pollen shape in polar view.
Subechinate
sporoderm with spinae of less than 1 um placed on the tectum of lophate pollens.
Subisopolar
pollen grain in which the two polar areas are not quite the same. The one can be more or less convex than the other or even flat.
Suboblate
pollen with the P/E ratio between 0.75 to 0.88 and slightly flattened at the poles.
Subprolate
pollen with the P/E ratio between 1.14 to 1.33 and slightly elongated at the poles.
Subtèctate
pollen grain with discontinuous interrupted tectum.
Subtriangular
type of pollen shape in polar view.
Suprareticulate
ref. sculture. Reticulum sporoderm leaning on the tectum.
Syncolporate
. aperture. Pollen grain with colpi connected or fused in polar area (including pori).
Syncopate
ref. aperture. Pollen grain with colpi anastomosed (fused) in polar area.
