Peaches grow in a fairly limited range in dry, continental or temperate climates, as trees have a need for cold so that key physiological chemical reactions occur. They thrive in sunny clay soils and tolerate calcareous ones well. They do not like acid soils. The plant requires shelter from north winds to prevent spring frosts from compromising the crop (0 - 600 m, in Italy).
