It prefers woods and thickets, managed forests, plantations and orchards, grazing systems, disturbed areas, railroads, roadsides, natural forests, natural grasslands, riverbanks. It grows best on moist, rich, loamy soils, those of limestone origin and soils without pronounced subsoil development. It is very sensitive to poorly drained or compact plastic soils. (0 - 1000 m)
